New Supermicro Silicon Valley Facilities for AI and Liquid-Cooled Solutions

Supermicro, global provider of servers and infrastructure solutions for AI, cloud, storage, and 5G/Edge, is making significant strides in Silicon Valley with new campus expansions. This growth is in response to the rising demand for liquid-cooled data centers, which are becoming increasingly essential for handling AI-focused workloads. The new facilities will integrate into Supermicro’s liquid-cooled ecosystem, designed to expedite the delivery of comprehensive plug-and-play solutions to customers globally. These solutions will encompass everything from individual systems and racks to complete water towers, ensuring a streamlined and efficient setup process. As AI factories continue to emerge, the necessity for liquid-cooled data centers has never been more critical. These centers would not only boost AI compute performance per watt but also enhance overall data center performance. Additionally, they offer significant environmental and economic benefits, including reduced electricity consumption and up to 40% lower operational expenses compared to traditional air-cooled data centers.Charles Liang, President and CEO of Supermicro, highlighted the company’s leadership in the AI and data center markets. “Supermicro has the highest performing generative deep learning and inferencing AI platform and clusters which benefit from liquid-cooled technologies,” said Mr. Liang. He noted the growing interest among data center operators in direct liquid-cooled solutions for their efficiency and energy savings. “Supermicro is developing building block liquid-cooled solutions for AI factories and the HPC market. We anticipate that liquid-cooled data centers will grow from historically less than 1% to an expected 15% and up to 30% of all data center installations in the next two years. This expansion positions us to capture the majority share of that growth. New data centers will run more efficiently, reducing their carbon footprint, and can be virtually free, compared to air-cooled data centers, with significant operational savings realized through lower electricity use over time.”San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan expressed his enthusiasm for Supermicro’s expansion. “We are thrilled that Supermicro is expanding in San Jose and leading the charge to reduce the impact of data centers. Supermicro represents the best of Silicon Valley as a company that continues to push the boundaries of both technology and sustainability.”Supermicro’s comprehensive approach as a total solution provider would be a key component of their success. The company supplies all necessary components for an optimized liquid-cooled setup, including cold plates, coolant distribution manifolds (CDMs), redundant coolant distribution units (CDUs), and external cooling towers. These elements are designed and rigorously tested by Supermicro engineers, ensuring high-quality solutions that enable organizations to achieve productivity gains quickly.Supermicro ServersMany of Supermicro’s servers are tailored for high-performance NVIDIA GPUs, crucial for AI processing. This includes high-density systems like the 4U-8GPU models, Intel CPU-based SYS-421GE-TNHR2-LCC, and AMD CPU-based AS -4125GS-TNHR2-LCC. Additionally, popular models such as the 8U-8GPU systems are liquid-cooled ready. The NVIDIA-based 1U ARS-111GL-NHR-LCC, featuring the Grace Hopper Superchip, and the 8U-20-node SuperBlade server, which offers the highest CPU and GPU computing density available, are also optimized for liquid cooling. Other liquid-cooled optimized systems in high-volume production include the 2U-4 node Supermicro BigTwin and the 4U-8 node FatTwin multi-node servers.Supermicro collaborates closely with data center operators to ensure the right server technology matches the unique demands of each organization and cloud service provider. This application-specific optimization, particularly for liquid-cooled servers, would significantly reduce the operational costs of data centers.Given the limited experience many customers have with handling liquids in data centers, Supermicro emphasizes the importance of vendor-led installation, acceptance testing, and ongoing maintenance and warranty services. The company’s highly trained service organization would play a crucial role in the successful deployment and support of liquid-cooling technologies.
