AWS to Invest €8.8 Bn in Its Frankfurt Cloud Region

In response to rising customer demand for cloud services in Germany, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed intentions to invest an additional €8.8 billion in its current cloud infrastructure in the AWS European (Frankfurt) Region. Additionally, AWS revealed last month that it will be investing €7.8 billion in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud between 2024 and 2040.During the course of its €9.6 billion investment in Germany between 2014 and 2023, AWS supported around 5,900 annual jobs and is expected to have contributed €18.4 billion to the country’s GDP. The planned investment announcement of €8.8 billion today is expected to support over 15,200 jobs yearly from 2024 to 2026 and add €15.4 billion to Germany’s GDP.  By the end of 2025, Brandenburg, Germany will host the first AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which is expected to generate €17.2 billion in economic production and sustain 2,800 employment annually on average between 2024 and 2040.AWS Cloud Development CentersBerlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, and Walldorf are home to AWS’s corporate offices. Professionals in the fields of sales, marketing, and business development reside at these offices.Aachen, Berlin, Dresden, and Tübingen are home to AWS Development Centers, which form the foundation for AWS Cloud development, encompassing AI and machine learning technologies like Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock.To upskill Germany’s future generation of tech workers and provide accessible cloud learning, AWS is investing in workforce training initiatives. AWS re/Start, AWS Educate, AWS Academy, AWS Skills to Jobs Tech Alliance, AWS GetIT, and the nation’s first national cloud computing certification are among the initiatives. Another is an apprenticeship program in Frankfurt run in partnership with Siemens AG.AWS is dedicated to minimizing its environmental effect by using energy-saving technologies such as specially designed Graviton4 and Trainium processors, which use less energy than data centers located on-site. Furthermore, by 2030, AWS hopes to be water positive – that is, to return more water to communities than it consumes for daily operations. To assist customers in streamlining their cloud architectures, measuring emissions, projecting future impacts, and accelerating sustainability research and innovation, AWS offers tools such as the AWS Well-Architected Sustainability Pillar, AWS Customer Carbon Footprint Tool, and Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative.
